Williamsville, NY – The D'Youville women's tennis team fell in their second match of the weekend on Sunday morning as the women lost to the Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 7-2.
Morgan Finn (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) picked up a point on Sunday morning as she won her first career conference match in straight sets, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-3. Gillian Wittig (Depew, NY/Depew) played three hard-fought sets against the Mounties number one player, bringing her record to 3-1 in conference play as the team's number one singles player.
In doubles play, Dena Iadanza (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and Bryannia Sutton (Mexico, NY/Mexico) won their first match of the year as the second doubles pairing, defeating their opponents 9-7. The top pairing of Wittig and Krista Cornell (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) nearly secured another point for the Spartans, but were defeated by Aloysius' top pairing. Vaughnna Bauer (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) also continued to put in a strong effort for the women in her first season with the team.
Cornell was named team captain prior to the match as she has been an outstanding leader and player for the Spartans throughout her previous three years with the team.
The next match for the women will come on Saturday, September 16 as the women host the Roberts Wesleyan JV team for a scrimmage.
