Erie, PA – The D'Youville women's tennis team won their first match of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Penn State-Behrend Lions by the final score of 7-2.
Lauren Karoglan (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) continued her hot start to the season by helping the team pick up a pair of points. In the first singles match, Karoglan won 7-3, 7-6 to earn her first point. She then partnered with Gillian Wittig (Depew, NY/Depew) as the two won the top doubles pairing 8-5. Wittig also won her singles match, defeating the second singles player for a point with the score of 6-2, 6-1.
Dena Iadanza (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and Amanda Waliszewski (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) were outstanding in each of their singles matches as well and as a doubles pairing. The two won their doubles match 8-0 over the Lion's second pairing. Iadanza won her singles match 6-0, 6-1 with Waliszewski winning her singles match 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
Allison Meissner (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) picked up a point for the women with a 7-6, 6-0 win in her singles match. Lexi Dickson (Hamilton, Ont./Frontier) and Bryannia Sutton (Mexico, NY/Mexico) each competed extremely hard in matches, helping the women get their first win of the season.
The win for the Spartans was the first of head coach Dassy Pawlik's career. As a team, D'Youville played extremely well and received contributions from everyone.
D'Youville will next play on Saturday, September 8 as they travel to Penn State-Altoona to play the Lions at 1:00pm.
