Alfred, NY – After falling in their first match of the season to Alfred State, the D'Youville women's volleyball team bounced back and captured their first win of the season against the Hilbert Hawks by the final score of 3-2.
D'Youville would take the first set over the Hawks 25-20, but Hilbert would come back to take the next two sets 25-16 and 25-22. Facing elimination, the Spartans would bounce back and win the fourth set 25-15, forcing a deciding fifth set. The Hawks couldn't stop the momentum of the Spartans as D'Youville won 15-12 over Hilbert for their first win of the season.
Junior Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) led the team with 8 kills, followed by Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) with 7 kills, carrying over her strong play from the first game. Schneider led the team on the defensive end for the second straight game recording a team high 29 kills.
Christine Seibert (Cassadaga Valley, NY/Cassadaga Valley) was second on the team with 16 digs, while Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the team with 16 assists and added 11 digs. Having a strong all-around game was sophomore Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City), who had 6 kills and 13 digs.
The team recorded 33 kills and 26 assists. On defense, the team had 9 total blocks with 86 digs. Freshman Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) and junior Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) tied with 3 total blocks.
D'Youville will head to Brockport on Wednesday, September 9th to play against the Golden Eagles at 7pm.
