Brockport, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team played visitor to the undefeated Brockport Golden Eagles on Wednesday, but could not knock off the hosts as the fell in three straight sets, 3-0.
Brockport took control of the game early with an 8-2 lead before the D'Youville offense would get rolling. Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) provided a spark after tallying a kill. Following a kill and service ace from Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City), the Spartans closed the gap to two points, trailing 12-10. However, the Golden Eagle's game would go to another level and would dominate the rest of the set, winning 25-13.
In set number two, D'Youville grabbed an early lead thanks to a Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) kill. Holding a 4-3 lead after McCarthy's kill, Brockport would again get on a tear and record 10 unanswered points. The hosts would continue their aggressive play all the way to the end, taking the second set 25-12.
Facing the possibility of it being their final set, the Spartans came out strong in the third set leading 5-2 and then 7-5 after a block from Stewart and freshman Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy). D'Youville would push their lead to five at 15-10 after an Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) kill, but the resilient Eagles wouldn't be beaten. Coming back to tie the game at 17, Brockport would go back and forth with D'Youville until the very end as the Golden Eagles would win in three sets, taking the third set 25-23.
Megan McCarthy recorded a team high 4 kills on the evening. McCarthy, Christina Horton (Irondequoit, NY/West Irondequoit), Christine Seibert (Cassadaga Valley, NY/Cassadaga Valley) all tallied 5 digs each, which was the team high. Abby Booth had 8 assists while Kaylee Stewart had 3 total blocks.
The next match for the women will come this weekend, as the Spartans head to Erie, PA for the Penn State-Behrend Invitational.
