Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team hosted their only tri-match of the season on Saturday afternoon and was swept by the two visiting schools, Wells and Westminster, by the scores of 3-0 and 3-0.
In their first match of the day, the women faced off against the Wells College Express. Wells got out to an early 9-4 lead after a run of 5 unanswered points. The Express continued to carry their lead to 14-7, until Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) picked up a kill and brought the score to 14-8. Wells would score another 4 unanswered points and eventually carry their lead to a 25-14 victory in the first set.
The second set would be a battle between the two teams. Tied at 4, the Spartans would score 3 consecutive points with Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) serving to take a 7-4 lead. The Spartans would then take an 11-7 lead before Wells would tie the game at 11. Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) had 3 kills in 4 points to give D'Youville a 15-12 lead before the two teams again fought to a tie at 22 all. The Express would score three points consecutively to end the set 25-22.
The third set would be similar to the second, with both teams matching each other point for point. Wells held a 22-20 lead but Smith would again provide a spark to the Spartan offense and the team would trail 23-22. However, the Express held off the Spartans and would take the set 25-22 and the game 3-0.
For their second match of the day, D'Youville took on Westminster, who had previously been defeated by the Wells in the match before. The Spartans continued their spirited play from their match against Wells, going point-for-point with the Titans and held an early 10-9 lead. Westminster would then pour on the offense and go on a major run, outscoring D'Youville 16-4 and winning the first set 25-14.
The Spartans were down 14-9 in the second set until a kill from McCarthy followed by 2 service aces from her put DYC back in the game down by 2. Then, 2 kills from Fleming and a service ace from Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) tied the game up at 15-15 until Westminster again ran away with the game, winning by the final score of 25-18.
For the final set of the day, the Spartans would hold a promising lead at 18-13 until the Titans again turned their game up to another level. Westminster scored 6 of 8 points to tie the game at 20 and would go on to win the set 25-22 and the game 3-0.
Megan Schneider had a career day for the Spartans. Schneider set a career high in assists with 25 against Wells and then had her second career high against Westminster with 24 assists for 49 total. She added 18 digs, which was the team high for the day. Kendyll Smith also had a very good outing, recording 18 kills, 7 digs and 3 total blocks.
Megan McCarthy played a big role on the team with 11 kills, 7 service aces and 5 total blocks between the two games. Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) had 13 kills and 7 digs, with Julie Fleming adding 7 kills, 3 total blocks and 4 service aces on the day.
The women will get back to conference action this week as they play Pitt.-Bradford on Wednesday, October 17th in Bradford, PA.
