Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team nearly gathered their first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately were defeated by the visiting La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 3-2.
D'Youville would hold an early 7-4 lead in set number one following a kill from Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City). La Roche would come back to tie the game at 11 and again at 15, but D'Youville would create a 2 point lead each time. Tied at 19, the Redhawks would open up a 2 point lead until the Spartans would fight back and recapture the lead following 3 unanswered points. D'Youville would take the first set 25-22 on Smith's set winning kill.
La Roche would come out on fire in the second set. Leading 6-1, the Redhawks would extend their lead to 10 at 17-7. D'Youville would close the lead to 8 following a kill from Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson), but La Roche would continue their strong play through the end of the set and win by the score of 25-11.
The third set was much of the same from La Roche. Again starting the set with a 6-1 lead, the Redhawks would score 8 unanswered points and lead the Spartans 19-6. D'Youville made a late push to get back into the game, but it was too late as La Roche would take it 25-12.
Showing their resolve, D'Youville would come alive again in the fourth set. Opening the set on a 5-0 scoring run, the Spartans would extend their lead to 7-1 just a few points later. However, La Roche bounced back into the game and trailed the Spartans 8-6. The Redhawks then picked up their overall game and took a 12-10 lead. The two teams would battle back and forth until the score was 20-20. With Stewart leading the way, the Spartans took 5 of the next 6 points to win the fourth set and force a fifth set.
The Redhawks got back on track in the fifth set, showing why the won the second and third games in commanding fashion by going on a 7-0 scoring run to begin the fifth set. They would go on to win by the final score of 15-2 and win the match 3-2.
Kaylee Stewart led the way on offense for the Spartans with 13 kills. Kendyll Smith followed Stewart with 8. Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) added 7 kills and Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) had 6 more. After setting a career high in assists last weekend, Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) set her new career high Saturday with 29.
On the defensive end, Kaitlyn Grimm (Erie, PA/Iroquois) had 16 digs to lead the team. Schneider and Smith also had double digit digs, recording 11 and 12. McCarthy had 4 total blocks with Fleming and Stewart each recording 3.
The women will play their next game on the road at Hilbert on Tuesday, October 20th at 7:00pm.
