Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team played their second to last home match of the season Saturday afternoon and were defeated by the visiting Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 3-1.
D'Youville would have a strong first set of the match after tying the game up 5-5 on a block from freshman Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy). The Spartans would score 4 unanswered points following Fleming's block to open up a 9-5 lead. Mount Aloysius would bring the game to within 2 points after trailing 13-11, but the Spartans would go on a 9-0 scoring run, led by Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden). D'Youville would win the first set by the final of 25-17.
Mount Aloysius came out in the second and set and had a stronger performance, leading the game 13-10. D'Youville would close the gap to 2, trailing 17-15, but wouldn't be able to get back into the game, losing by the final score of 25-17.
The Spartans would regain some momentum in the third set, leading over the Mounties 13-9. Mount Aloysius closed in on D'Youville's lead and trailed 15-14, but a kill by Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) gave the Spartans some breathing room. Down by 3 at 21-18, the Mounties battled back to tie the set at 22 all and then again at 24 all. The visitors would then close out the set by winning the final 2 points and take the third set 26-24.
Again starting the set strong, D'Youville held at least a 2 point lead over the Mounties after tying the game at 9-9. A kill from Fleming gave the Spartans a 4 point lead at 17-13, but Mount Aloysius dug deep and fought back to tie the game at 18. The Mounties scored 4 unanswered points after that to take a 22-18 lead and went on to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Three players reached double-digit kills for D'Youville. Megan McCarthy and Julie Fleming each had 12; followed by Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) had 11. Kaylee Stewart added 6. Fleming also added 7 total blocks in the match.
For the third consecutive match, sophomore Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) set a career high in assists, this time with 42. Schneider also had 10 digs, which tied for second on the team with Savannah Brayton (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury), who also had 10. Kaitlyn Grimm (Erie, PA/Iroquois) led the team with 15 digs.
The women will host their last home match of the season on Wednesday, October 28th at 7pm against Penn State-Behrend. The game is the team's 'Dig Pink Night.'
