Women's Volleyball Earns First Win of Season in Split of Saturday Tri-Match

Buffalo, NY – Following a loss in their opening match of the season, the D'Youville women's volleyball team bounced back to go 1-1 in their home opening day, falling to Alfred State 3-1 and defeating Cazenovia 3-0.

Alfred State took a commanding lead early in the first set over the Spartans. Their 12-5 lead increased to 20-8 and the Pioneers went on to take set one 25-13.

The two teams played to a tie at seven-all in the second set until Alfred State went ahead by three at 13-10. D'Youville came back to tie the set at 16 but then took a three-point lead of their own at 19-16. The Spartans would take their lead to the finish as they won the second set 25-20.

In the third set, the two teams were in a heated battle throughout. The two teams were never more than two points apart until the Spartans took a 16-13 lead midway through the third set. Despite taking the biggest lead of the set, Alfred State would come right back to score seven unanswered points and take a four-point lead. With a lead at 24-20, the Pioneers seemed to have the match in hand but D'Youville battled right back to tie the game at 26-26. The Alfred attack would finish off the third set with two straight points, winning 28-26.

The Pioneers were in control very early in the fourth set. They took a 9-1 lead and didn't look back. Their lead increased to 20-11 and then the final score of 25-15, winning the match 3-1.

Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) led the team with 10 kills and 21 digs. Right behind Schneider was Jamine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) with 20 digs and Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) was the only other Spartan with double-digit digs with 11. Booth had a team high 16 assists, followed by McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) with 12.

In each of the three sets against Cazenovia, D'Youville was in charge from the initial serve. After leading 9-8 in the first set, the Spartans went on to outscore the Wildcats 16-7 and win 25-15. Set number two started with a point and 10 consecutive serves from Booth for an 11-0 lead. D'Youville remained in control throughout and won 25-13.

Much like the first two sets, the Spartans were strong in the beginning. With an 8-2 lead, the team increased their lead to 20-10 and then fought off a late charge from Cazenovia to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Schneider again led the team in kills, this time with 14. Booth and Cartonia were the leaders in assists once again with 16 and 12 respectively. Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) and Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) added five kills while Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) had eight.

Savannah Brayton (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had a team high nine digs.

D'Youville will have two days off until their next match on Tuesday, September 6th as they stay local, traveling to Buffalo State to play the Bengals at 7pm.
