D'Youville Suffers a Pair of Losses to Begin Weekend

Meadville, PA – The D'Youville women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday evening at Allegheny College, falling to the Gators 3-0 and then going on to lose to the Thiel Tomcats 3-2.

Allegheny was up early with an 8-4 lead over the Spartans. The Gators would hold a decent cushion over D'Youville for a good portion of the first set, but they would pull to within two trailing 18-16. The Spartans held tight down 22-20, but Allegheny would pull away at the end and win 25-20.

In the second set, the Gators went up on the Spartans by 10 at 13-3 and help their lead for the entire set, winning 25-11.

The Spartans led 6-4 in the third set before Allegheny went on a 7-0 scoring run to retake the lead. D'Youville would pull back to within two but the Gators would go on a roll again to win the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.

Senior Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) led the team with five kills, followed by four each from Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport). Both Schneider and Savannah Brayton (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had 12 digs to lead the team.

The second match of the day for the Spartans proved to be very close right down to the final set. Booth started off the match with six consecutive serves that resulted in points for the team, including two service aces. With a 6-0 lead, D'Youville was able to put a large enough buffer between them and Thiel whereas the Tomcats couldn't get the game closer than five points. The Spartans went on to win 25-20.

Set number two was more tightly contested in the early goings as D'Youville trailed Thiel 8-7. However, from that point the Tomcats took off with a 20-13 lead. They would then win the set 25-15.

The third set was led by the Spartans early on with a 7-2 lead. Thiel then picked up the pace to trail by only two at 13-11. The Tomcats then tied the set at 17-17 and began to edge past D'Youville, eventually taking the third set 25-21.

Things weren't looking good in the fourth set for D'Youville as they trailed 16-4 to the Tomcats until a furious comeback got them back in the match. The Spartans outscored Thiel 17-5 to tie the set at 21, highlighted by three service aces from Booth and eight consecutive points off of McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) serves, giving the team a 24-21 lead. D'Youville would complete the comeback and win the fourth set 25-23, forcing a deciding fifth set.

The Spartan's momentum couldn't carry over into the fifth set as Thiel began to pull away after the set was tied at 4-4. The Tomcats carried their lead to the end, winning the set 15-8 and the match 3-2.

McCarthy and Schneider shared the team lead in kills with eight each. Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) added six with Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) accounting for five and Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) with four.

Brayton had a team and season high 31 digs, followed by Schneider with 24. Booth had a team high five service aces and 20 assists.
