Cresson, PA - The D'Youville women's volleyball team went 1-1 Saturday afternoon after falling to Penn State-Altoona 3-2 and defeating Mount Aloysius 3-2.
In their first match of the day, the Spartans jumped out to a two set lead over the Lions with the winning scores of 25-21 and 25-23. However, Altoona came back to win the next two sets 17-25 each. In the final deciding fifth set, Penn State completed the comeback, winning 12-15.
With 12 kills, Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) led the team. Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) had a team high 24 assists with eight kills, second on the team. Freshman Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) had a team high 17 digs in the match. Three players tied with seven kills and McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) added 20 assists.
Against Mount Aloysius in their second match of the day, the Spartans grabbed their first conference win of the season by defeating the host Mounties. D'Youville took the first set 25-19 and third set 25-15, but fell in the fourth set 22-25 to extend the match to a fifth set. The Spartans would then take the final set 18-16 to win the match 3-2.
Smith led the team with 12 kills for the second consecutive match. Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) had 10 kills for second on the team, while Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) added eight. Booth again recorded 24 assists to lead the team with Cartonia recording 18. Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) had four total blocks, second behind Fleming's seven.
Filkov again led the team in digs with 11, with Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) chipping in with seven. Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) added five kills and Savannah Brayton (Queesnbury, NY/Queesnbury) added two digs on the day.
The women will next host Niagara College on Tuesday, September 27th at 7pm.
