Erie, PA - The D'Youville women's volleyball team won their first match over Penn State-Behrend in 16 years on Wednesday evening, defeating the Lions by the final of 3-2.
Behrend started off the match by building a 16-10 lead in the first set. After maintaining their six point lead to 20-14, the Lions took a 24-15 lead over the Spartans and had the first set on the brink of victory. D'Youville then scored the next four points to trail 24-19. The Lions would then score one more point, winning the first set 25-19.
The second set was a closer battle between the two teams. After being tied at 10-10, Behrend edged out to a 14-12 lead, but D'Youville would come right back to take a 19-17 advantage. The women would then go on to outscore the Lions 6-1, winning the second set 25-18.
As they did in the first set, Behrend grabbed a 16-10 lead over the Spartans in the third. However, D'Youville stormed back to tie the match at 17. The two teams were then tied at 18, 19 and 20 but the Spartans pulled away at the end to win the third set 25-21.
On the brink of defeat, Penn State-Behrend held a 17-15 advantage half way through the fourth set. D'Youville would come within a point of tying the set several times, but the Lions held off the Spartan's off. With Behrend leading 24-21, D'Youville scored two unanswered to trail 24-23. However, the Lions scored the final point to win 25-23 to force a fifth set.
The fifth set was close just as the first four. D'Youville took an early 5-3 advantage with the Lions tying it up at 7-7. However, the Spartans took an 8-7 and never looked back. They took their lead and secured it to the end, winning the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
Several juniors were standouts for the team in their match Wednesday evening. Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had a team high 16 kills to go with 19 digs, tied for second on the team. Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the team with 28 assists and 25 digs while Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) also had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs.
Freshman Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) also registered 19 digs, with McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) registering 20 assists and 13 digs for the fourth double-double on the team. Sophomore Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) also had double-digit kills with 10.
Seniors Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson), Savannah Brayton (Queesnbury, NY/Queesnbury) and Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) combined for 13 kills, 10 digs and two total blocks. Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) and Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) added a total of one kills, two digs and an assist as well.
The women will get back to action this Saturday, October 15th as they travel to Penn State-Behrend to play La Roche and Pitt.-Greensburg.
