Women's Volleyball Inches Closer to Playoffs With Win Over Hilbert

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's volleyball team continued their high level of play in conference by defeating the Hilbert Hawks Wednesday evening by the final score of 3-0.

The first set of the evening was a dominate showcase by the Spartans. Hilbert trailed 11-8 to D'Youville until the Spartans turned it on. With Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) serving, the team scored six unanswered points to take a 17-8 lead. The team then went on to outscore the Hawks 8-5 to close out the first set and win 25-13.

In the second set, Hilbert came out and was this time the dominate team. D'Youville was down 10-2 before they began to chip away at the lead. They pulled to within three at 11-8 and then closed the gap to one at 15-14. The Hawks tried to pull away but the Spartans overtook Hilbert at 19-17. Then the Hawks came back taking a 22-20 lead. However, D'Youville would go on to score five of the final six points to win the second set 25-23.

Hilbert again came out in the third set to an early lead at 7-4. The Spartans again battled back and tied the game up at 13-13. The Hawks then jumped out to a five point lead at 19-14 but D'Youville answered by scoring four unanswered points to trail by one. Tied at 20, D'Youville finished the job they started by scoring five of the next seven, winning the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.

Senior Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) led the team with 15 kills in the match. Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) added seven while senior Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) chipped in with six. 

Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) led the team with 13 digs while senior Savannah Brayton (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had nine. Schneider and Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) also had nine. Booth led the team with 23 assists and McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had 13. Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) had three digs in the match and Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) had four kills.

The women will host their final regular season game of 2016 this Saturday, October 29th against Franciscan. The match will begin at 1pm.
