Women's Volleyball Gets First Win on Opening Day of Season over Keuka

Keuka, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team started their season on the right note Friday afternoon, defeating the Keuka Wolfpack 3-1.

The two teams played a close first set as Keuka trailed 10-9 early on. D'Youville would then begin to pull away as Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) combined to score six points while they were serving for a 17-10 lead. Despite building a large lead, the Wolfpack would storm back and tie the set at 18-18. However the Spartans would regain their composure to win the set 25-20.

For the second set in a row, D'Youville would jump ahead 17-10 before Keuka would come back. The Wolfpack would take a 22-19 lead before the two teams tied at 25-25. The home team would go on to score the next two points, giving Keuka a 27-25 win, tying the match at 1-1.

After falling behind 10-8 in the third set, Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) began serving for the Spartans and helped lead them back to a 14-10 lead. With Schneider and Fleming serving again, the women built a 20-14 lead as McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) helped close out the third set with excellent serving, giving the women a 25-15 win and driving the match to 2-1.

Refusing to go down without a fight, Keuka came out in the fourth set and played the Spartans tough. The two were tied at 14-14 and then 21-21. The Spartans went up 24-21 and were able to hold off the Wolfpack, winning the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

"Always nice starting the season with a win," said head coach Stephanie Kazmierczak. "We gained more insight into what needs improvement so we will talk about that tonight and be ready to play tomorrow. Very proud of my team."

D'Youville had very strong performances from several different players. Cartonia recorded a double-double with a team high 17 assists to go with 10 digs. Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) had a team high 19 digs, followed by Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) with 13. Schneider had a great performance for the women with eight kills and 11 digs.

Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) led the team with nine kills while Booth had six kills, nine digs, and 12 assists. Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) saw her first action as a Spartan and recorded four kills and two digs. Fleming also had six kills.

The next pair of matches for the women comes tomorrow, September 2 as they play Hartwick at 11:00am and Chatham at 1:00pm.
