Williamsport, PA – The D'Youville women's volleyball team lost a pair of games on Friday evening, first falling to the Nazareth Golden Flyers 3-0 and then the Lycoming Warriors 3-1.
D'Youville and Nazareth played a tight first set as the two teams were tied at 13-13 before the Golden Flyers went on to score eight of the next nine points to take a commanding lead. They would then go on to hold off a late charge by the Spartans to take the first set 25-21.
In the second set, the two teams were tied at 6-6 before Nazareth went on a 19-5 run to take the second set 25-11. The Golden Flyers would lead again third set, developing a large lead early and taking the third set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) led the team with 11 assists, adding four kills and five digs. Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) led the team with 11 digs and five kills. Both Booth and Schneider each had two service aces. Five players for the Spartans had at least three kills each.
Against Lycoming in the second match of the day, the Spartans trailed 13-10 before coming back to tie the first set and then take over. The women went on a 14-4 scoring run to take the first set 25-17. However in the second set, the Warriors were dominate throughout as they took a 11-7 lead and turned it into a 25-13 victory.
With D'Youville battling harder in the third set, Lycoming took a 14-13 lead and expanded it to three at 20-17. The Spartans continued to be right on the heels of the Warriors at 23-22, but Lycoming would grab the final two points and win the set 25-22. The Warriors continued their strong play into the fourth set where they were in control throughout, never trailing and winning the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) recorded a team high 13 kills with Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) each adding eight. Schneider had another impressive performance by leading the team with 17 digs and recording four kills.
Booth again led the team in assists, this time with 19. McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) added 15 assists with two service aces. Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) recorded five kills in the match. Seven different Spartans each had at least two kills.
The next pair of matches for the women comes tomorrow, Saturday, September 9 as they play Hartwick at 10:00am and Clarks Summit at 12:00pm. Both matches will be hosted by Lycoming.
