Fourth Win in Last Five Matches Gives Women's Volleyball Momentum Heading into Conference Play

Rochester, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team went .500 on Saturday at RIT, falling to the RIT Tigers 3-0 in game one but defeating the Medaille Mavericks 3-0 in game two.

In the first set against RIT, the two teams were even throughout most of the first set as the score was tied 14-14. RIT then went on a 10-4 scoring run against the Spartans to take a commanding lead and win the first set 25-21.

The second set was similar to the first in terms of quality of play from both sides, with D'Youville leading 12-10 early on. RIT would come back to retake the lead at 15-14 and then outscore the Spartans 10-3 to close out the set and win 25-17. RIT's strong play would carry over into the third set as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead early. They continued their momentum to the end of the set, winning 25-15 and winning the match 3-0.

McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) led the team with 10 assists in the match, adding one service ace. Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) each had five kills, with Schneider recording four digs. Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) had a team high nine digs.

Match number two of the day proved to be a bounce-back performance for the women. Both the first and second sets of the match ended with D'Youville taking 25-16 victories over Medaille. In the first set, the Spartans broke away from a one-point advantage at 12-11 and went on a 13-5 scoring run to go up 1-0. They carried their momentum over into the second set, leading by as many as eight to earn their second win of the match and go up 2-0.

Medaille picked up their game in the third set, coming back from an 11-6 deficit to tie it up at 14-14. The Mavericks would then take over the lead from the Spartans at 24-22 and come within a point of earning their first set victory of the match, but D'Youville scored four unanswered points over Medaille to take the third set 26-24 and win the match 3-0.

Cartonia had a solid match with 24 assists, seven digs, and five kills. Smith recorded a team high 10 kills to go with eight digs. Bubar led the team in digs for the second consecutive match with 12, followed by Schneider with 11. Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and Schneider each had eight kills with Talia Wright (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) and Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) both tallying four service aces. Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) added a kill with Courtney Kling (Elma, NY/Iroquois) contributing a dig.

D'Youville will next play on Saturday, September 23 as they begin their conference schedule hosting a quad-match. The women will play Mount Aloysius first at 1:00pm and then Penn State-Altoona at 3:00pm. Pitt-Bradford will be the fourth team in the quad-match.
