Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team suffered back-to-back losses on Saturday to begin their conference schedule, first falling to the Mount Aloysius Mounties 3-2 and then the Penn State-Altoona Lions 3-2.
Mount Aloysius dominated in the first set of the day, defeating D'Youville 25-12. In the second set, the Spartans led or held a share of the lead throughout. The women were tied 23-23 before the Mounties would score the final two points to win the set 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead.
The next two sets were controlled by the Spartans. They jumped out to an 11-point advantage in the third set to take a 19-8 lead, going on to win 25-12. After trailing 14-12 in the fourth set, D'Youville would go on a 13-2 scoring run to close it out and win 25-16, tying the match at 2-2.
Midway through the fifth set, the teams were tied at 8-8 before D'Youville took a 10-9 lead. However the Mounties would score six unanswered points to take the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
Four different players recorded double-doubles in the loss. Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) had a team high 19 assists paired with a team high 17 digs. Both Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) and McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had 10 assists and 16 digs while Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had 10 kills and 14 digs. Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) recorded a team high 16 kills.
To begin the second match of the day, D'Youville came back from trailing 18-14 to win over Altoona 25-22. The Spartans began the second set with a 4-1 lead, but the Lions came back to take a 14-8 advantage. Coming back to tie it at 20-20 apiece, D'Youville would hold a late lead at 23-22 before Altoona would score the final three points of the set, winning 25-23.
Tied at 4-4 in the third, the Lions would take a 10-8 lead before they scored nine unanswered points for a 19-8 lead. With a commanding lead, Altoona would then score six more points to win the third set 25-15. Facing elimination, D'Youville opened up the fourth with an 8-1 lead and then extended it to 14-5. Altoona would pull to within two at 21-19, but the Spartans wouldn't allow another point as they went on to win 25-19 and tie the match at 2-2.
After scoring the first point of the fifth and deciding set, the Spartans surrendered five unanswered points to the Lions. Altoona then outscored D'Youville 10-7 to win the fifth set 15-8 and the match 3-2.
Booth and Schneider recorded their second double-doubles of the day with Booth tallying 26 assists and 14 digs while Schneider had 13 kills and 13 digs. Cartonia added 16 assists in the match with Bubar recording 17 digs. Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) contributed 13 digs in the match. Both Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) each had eight kills in addition to Smith's 11.
The next match for the women comes on Wednesday, September 27 as they travel to Brockport to play at 7:00pm.
