Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Friday evening, falling to the Baldwin Wallace Yellowjackets and Houghton Highlanders 3-0.
Baldwin Wallace came into the first match of the day with and 20-0 record and showed why they were undefeated throughout the match. After a 7-7 tie in the first set, they took a 14-10 lead and then took off to win the set 25-18. They then jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second set and increased their lead to 19-9. The Yellowjackets would never trail in the second set as they went on to win 25-17.
Completing their straight set sweep, Baldwin Wallace would come out in the third with a 6-0 lead and increase their lead to 14-3. The Spartans would come back to make it competitive as they trailed 20-15, but they ultimately lost the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the team with 12 assists, adding three digs. Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) had a team high 15 digs while Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) had a team high eight kills. Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) each had six kills.
Houghton jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first set of match number two for the Spartans. Their 16-6 lead grew to 21-9 and then 25-16 as Houghton took a 1-0 lead. The Highlanders then again went up early on the Spartans in the second set, 9-3. D'Youville would come back to take an 11-10 lead over Houghton and hold the lead again at 23-22. However, the Highlanders would then score the final three points of the set to win 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead.
D'Youville in the third set 8-7, hoping to keep the match alive. Houghton would come right back to take the lead with four unanswered points at 11-8 and increase their lead to four at 21-17. The Highlanders then scored four of the next five points to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Booth again led the team in assists with 14 in the second match of the evening. Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) tallied four kills with two digs and an assist. Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), Fleming, and Smith each had three kills. Bubar led the team with 18 digs.
The next pair of games for the women will come tomorrow, September 30 as they host Alfred State at 11:00am and Grove City at 1:00pm.
