Women End September by With Split at Quad-Match

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team split their second quad-match of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Alfred State Pioneers 3-1 and falling to the Grove City Wolverines 3-0.

D'Youville took an early advantage over the Pioneers 8-3 in the first set. After Alfred State came back to within two points of the lead, the Spartans jumped out to an 18-11 lead and would go on to win the first set 25-15. Both teams battled back-and-forth in the second set, with Spartans leading 9-7 and the Pioneers coming back to take the lead at 11-9. D'Youville went ahead 21-19 over Alfred State, but the Pioneers then led 23-22 and went on to win the second set 25-22.

Like the first set, the Spartans were able to build an early lead in the third. Leading 10-5, D'Youville increased their lead to 16-10 and then 23-15 until they finished out the set 25-16. Alfred State took over the lead from the Spartans at 10-9 after falling behind early and held the lead at 22-19 in the fourth. However, D'Youville began to mount a comeback, tying it at 23-23. The Pioneers scored the next point to come to within one point of tying the match at 2-2, but D'Youville scored the final three points of the set, winning 26-24 and taking the match 3-1.

Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) recorded a double-double with a team high 19 assists paired with 10 digs. She also had four kills and six service aces. Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) led the team with 17 digs while Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) added 15 digs and seven kills. Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) led the team with 11 kills while Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) addied six. Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) had five service aces and four kills.

The second match of the day for the Spartans began with them taking a 10-5 lead over the Wolverines. Grove City then came right back to tie the match at 15-15 before taking a 22-17 lead. They would then close out their comeback to win the first set 25-17. D'Youville then bounced back to take an 8-5 lead in the second set, only to have Grove City once again tie it up. However the Spartans retook the lead at 18-14 before the Wolverines took the lead back at 23-20. The late push by Grove City was enough to earn them their second win of the match, taking set number two 25-22.

Looking to stay in the match, D'Youville began the third set with another lead at 7-6. From that point on, Grove City scored 11 unanswered points to take a 17-7 lead over the Spartans. Scoring five unanswered of their own, D'Youville fought to get back in the set only to have the Wolverines score eight of the next 10 points, giving them the 25-15 win in the third set and the 3-0 match victory.

Schneider led the team in the second match with nine kills. Bubar had a team high 18 digs while Booth tallied 12 assists and eight digs. McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had eight assists and six digs with Smith adding 10 digs and seven kills. Cartonia also had a team high three service aces, one ahead of Talia Wright (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) with two, also adding five digs.

The next match for the women is this Tuesday, October 3 as D'Youville travels to Pitt.-Bradford. Start time for the match is 7:00pm.
