Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team picked up a big conference win over a local rival on Wednesday evening by defeating the Medaille Mavericks 3-1 on senior night.
The two teams played a close first set as the match began as they were tied at 6-6 before the Spartans began to pull away. D'Youville took a 15-10 lead before Medaille pulled back to with two at 17-15. Before long, the Spartans would begin to build on their lead and eventually go on to win the first set 25-20.
Medaille led early in the second set before the Spartans came back to take the advantage over the Mavericks. Leading 8-7, D'Youville went on an 8-0 scoring run to take a commanding 16-7 lead. The Mavericks would chip away at the Spartan lead and trail 24-23, but D'Youville held on to grab the final point of the set, winning 25-23 and lead the match 2-0.
D'Youville led early in the third set before Medaille came back to tie it up at 6-6. The Spartans regained the lead but then the Mavericks came back to take a 16-13 lead. Medaille began to start building on their lead, expanding it to 23-19 and then eventually winning the third set 25-20.
Set number four was primarily a back-and-forth battle between the conference rivals. The Spartans took a 9-6 lead before Medaille came back and led 12-11. D'Youville then took the lead at 16-13 and then 20-18 but the Mavericks pulled to within a point of tying the match at two by leading 24-22. However the Spartans were resilient and came back to tie the set at 24-24 and then won the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.
Two seniors recorded double-doubles at their final home game. Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) recorded 13 kills and 20 digs to lead the team in both categories. Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the team with 21 assists, adding 10 digs while sophomore McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) recorded 12 assists and 11 digs.
Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) added 10 kills in the match, with Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) tallying 17 digs. Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) contributed 16 digs and a team high four service aces. Both Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) each had seven kills while Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and Courtney Kling (Elma, NY/Iroquois) combined for three kills.
The women will next play this Friday, October 20 as they travel to the University of Rochester to play at 6:00pm.
