Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville women's volleyball team began their 2017 post-season on the road Wednesday evening, losing to the fourth seeded La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 3-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference quarter-finals.
La Roche began the match by taking an early 11-5 lead in the first set. The fifth seeded Spartans closed the gap to three after bringing the score to 13-10, but the Redhawks pushed their lead up to five at 17-12. Following a D'Youville point, La Roche scored five consecutive points to take a 22-13 lead and then went on to win the first set 25-17.
Both teams played an even second set through the first several points. D'Youville led 6-5 and then tied the match 7-7. La Roche then went on an 11-0 scoring run to take an 18-7 lead. They then scored seven of the next 10 points to win the second set 25-10.
The Redhawks carried their effective play over from the second set to the third, taking a 12-5 lead. However the Spartans would catch right back up to trail by one at 13-12, but La Roche would extend their lead back to five at 20-15. D'Youville closed the gap to two at 23-21, but the Redhawks closed out the match with two of the next three points, winning the third set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
Four different players tied for the team lead in kills in the first round of the AMCC playoffs for D'Youville. Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City), Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy), Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport), and Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) each had four kills. Schneider added 10 digs while Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) led the team with 23 digs.
Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) each had six assists and six digs. Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) had five digs with Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) adding a kill and dig as well.
