Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team suffered a loss to a tough non-conference opponent in the Brockport Golden Eagles on Thursday evening by the final score of 3-0.
Brockport opened the match looking to make their presence known. They led 7-0 and then would maintain their seven-point lead at 17-10. The Golden Eagles would increase their lead to 10 at 23-13, then going on to win the first set 25-13.
Down one set, the Spartans had a response for Brockport to open up the second set. D'Youville led 7-4 before their opponent would take over and hold a 13-9 advantage. The Spartans would come back to trail by one at 14-13, but Brockport would go on a run and win the second set 25-18.
Determined to get back in the match, the Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third. Brockport would battle back to tie the set at 8-8, but D'Youville would score four straight to lead the set 12-8. The two teams would go back and forth until the Golden Eagles led 24-22. Nearly beaten, the Spartans tied the match at 24-24. However Brockport would score two of the next three points to win the set 27-25 and the match 3-0.
Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) led the team with seven kills and two blocks, adding eight digs. Desiree Walters (Oswego, IL/Oswego) recorded a team high 15 digs while Angela Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) tallied 13 assists to lead the team.
The next match for the women comes this Saturday, September 29 as they travel to Mount Aloysius to play the Mounties at 1:00pm.
