Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team played a hard-fought match on Tuesday evening, falling to the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers by the final score of 3-0.
D'Youville took it to the Panthers to begin the first set, leading 7-4 early. Bradford would catch up and take the lead at 14-11, but the Spartans battled back to the tune of a 16-15 advantage. The two teams continued to go back and forth as it was tied 22-22 and then D'Youville trailed 24-23, but the Panthers would score one additional point to take the first set 25-23.
The Panthers would then start off on a roll in the second set, leading 7-0. D'Youville fought back to trail by just three at 16-13, but Bradford went on a run to win the second set 25-18.
In the third set, both teams stepped up the intensity. The Spartans jumped out to an 8-4 lead and then went up 12-8 just a few minutes later. Bradford would tie it at 12-all before D'Youville went on a streak to lead 19-14. Within one point of taking their first set of the match at 24-21, the Panthers fought back. They came back to tie it 24-24 and then took a lead at 26-25, putting the Spartans on the ropes. Bradford would go on to score two of the final three points in the set to win 28-26 and win the match 3-0.
Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) led the team with six kills in the match, followed by Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) and Carly Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) with five each. Filkov led the team with 18 digs while Desiree Walters (Oswego, IL/Oswego) tallied 16 of her own.
Angela Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) led the team with eight assists while McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had five. Both Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) each had two blocks in the match.
The women will next play this Thursday, October 4 as they travel to Houghton to play the Highlanders at 7:00pm.
