Houghton, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team lost a road match against the Houghton Highlanders on Thursday evening by the final score of 3-0.
The Spartans took the lead early in the first set of the match as they led the Highlanders 7-6. Houghton would take over the lead at 11-10, but D'Youville came back to retake the lead at 13-11. Going back up by one at 19-18, Houghton would hold off the Spartans late as they would win the first set 25-20.
A 3-0 lead grew into a 10-5 lead for the Highlanders in the second set. Down 18-9, the Spartans fought hard to get back in it and cut their deficit to four at 20-16, but it was not enough to come all the way back as Houghton scored five of the next six points to take the second set 25-17.
D'Youville responded in the third with a 5-3 lead, but then the Highlanders came back and were ahead 13-8. The Spartans would not go quietly as they tied it up at 15, 16, and 17, but Houghton again had a strong ending to the set as they scored eight of the final nine points to win the third 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the team with seven kills and two blocks in the match. Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) added five kills while Talia Wright (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had four kills and 12 digs.
Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) and Desiree Walters (Oswego, IL/Oswego) tied for the team lead in digs with 14 in the match against Houghton. McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had a team high 12 assists.
The next match for the women will come next Wednesday, October 10 as they play at Penn State-Behrend at 7:00pm.
