Weekend Sweep Gives Women's Volleyball Fighting Chance at Playoffs

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's volleyball team won a pair of home matches on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Franciscan Barons 3-2 and the Alfred State Pioneers 3-0.

D'Youville played extremely well in their first set of the day, never trailing after the first point to win the first 25-21. Tied at 13-13 in the second, the Spartans went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-13 lead as they went on to go on a 6-0 run at the end of the second to win 25-16 and take a 2-0 lead.

Franciscan came out in the third determined to extend the match. They jumped out to a 6-1 lead, increasing it to a 19-12 advantage and then 20-14. The Spartans would then come roaring back with nine of the next 12 points to tie the third at 23-23. Tied at 24-24, the Barons would score the final two points of the set to win 26-24 and make the match 2-1 in favor of the Spartans.

Continuing from where they left off in the third, the Barons kept rolling into the fourth. They wnet up 9-3 and held off the Spartans to lead 15-12. They then grew their lead to five at 21-16 and would win the fourth 25-21, tying the match at 2-2.

After allowing the Barons back into the match, the Spartans turned up the intensity in the fifth set to take a 6-1 lead. Franciscan pulled to within three to trail 10-7, but D'Youville pulled away at the end to win 15-9 and the match 3-2.

Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) had an exceptional match, setting a career high in kills and digs for a single match. Filkov tallied 19 kills and 25 digs in the match for her second double-double in three matches. Her 19 kills led the team with Desiree Walters (Oswego, IL/Oswego) recording 29 digs to lead the team.

Carly Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) added a career high 14 kills with Talia Wright (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) adding 11 digs. Angela Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) also had a career high with 36 assists as McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) chipped in with 15. Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) added five kills.

Carrying over from their win in the first match of the day, the Spartans played extremely well in their second match against Alfred State. Alfred State got out to a 10-4 lead and would then go ahead by seven at 18-11. The Spartans then went on a tear as they scored the next nine points to take the lead at 20-18. The Pioneers would retake the lead at 23-22, but D'Youville would score the final three points of the set to win 25-23.

The teams traded points for most of the second set. Tied at 15, the Spartans began to pull away and led 21-16 before the Pioneers tied it at 22-22. Again, D'Youville would score the final three points of the set as they took down Alfred State 25-22.

Sets two and three were very similar as the teams traded points back-and-forth for a majority of the set. D'Youville went ahead 18-14 but Alfred State would then score the next four points to tie it at 18. The Spartans then scored four consecutive points themselves to lead 22-18 as they then would go on to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

J. Filkov led the offense again with her second double-double of the day with 11 kills and 10 digs. Walters led the team with 15 digs while Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) added four kills with Milleville adding six kills. Wright also contributed seven digs as well.

A. Filkov led the team in assists with 12 while Cartonia registered 11 as Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) had a kill and a block. Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) totaled three kills and two digs in the match while Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) tallied three kills. Ed Dah Way (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) played well in her playing time.

The next match for the women will come this Wednesday, October 24 as they will travel to Medaille to play the Mavericks at 7:00pm.
