Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team nearly overcame a 2-0 deficit against the Medaille Mavericks on Wednesday evening, falling by the final score of 3-2.
D'Youville took an early 7-2 lead in the first set before the Mavericks would come back to take an 11-10 lead after scoring seven consecutive points. They then took a 20-15 advantage, but the Spartans pulled back to within one a 20-19 before Medaille would score five the final six points to win the first set 25-20.
It was a tightly contested set in the second set as the Spartans led 14-13 half-way through. Medaille then got out to a 17-13 lead and maintained at least a two-point lead throughout the rest of the second, winning 25-21.
Determined to keep the match alive, D'Youville reached a 4-1 advantage before the Mavericks opened up a 15-10 lead. The Spartans fought back to tie it at 20-all, but Medaille was within one point of winning the match with a 24-23 lead. However the Spartans did not quit as they tied the third at 24-24 and then scored the next two points to win 26-24.
Still fighting for a fifth set, the Spartans led 11-9 over the Mavericks in the fourth. When Medaille tied the score at 17-17, D'Youville shifted into another gear to lead 23-20 and then 24-23. The Spartans would trail by one 25-24 as Medaille nearly took the fourth set and the match, but the Spartans once again turned it up with D'Youville winning the fourth 28-26, tying the match 2-2.
The Spartans carried their late success in the match into the fifth set as they led 5-4. Despite their strong play late, Medaille regained their early form to take an 11-6 lead and they went on to win the fifth 15-8 and the match 3-2.
Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) recorded her third consecutive double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs while Talia Wright (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) added 21 digs and seven kills. Desiree Walters (Oswego, IL/Oswego) led the team with 26 digs and Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) had 11.
With the loss, the Spartans have been eliminated from playoff contention in the AMCC. Their next match will be the last of their season as they host the La Roche Redhawks this Saturday, October 27 at 1:00pm.
