Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball team closed out their 2018 season on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the visiting La Roche Redhawks by the final of 3-1.
After a very tight score in the first set of the match, La Roche began to pull away mid-way through. They led 13-10 before going ahead 17-11. The Spartans would begin to chip away at the lead and eventually take it at 21-20. The battle would continue as the two teams were tied at 25 and 26 before the Redhawks would score the final two points and win the first set 28-26.
La Roche rode their late success from the first set into the second as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Just like they did in the first, D'Youville roared back to take the lead as they went ahead 10-9 before the Redhawks would go on a major run, outscoring the Spartans 15-5 to win the second set 25-14.
Attempting to fight off a 3-0 sweep, the Spartans went up 3-1 early in the third before La Roche would take control and lead 13-5. Down 22-12, D'Youville wasn't out and didn't quit. They scored the next eight points to trail 22-20 and then trailed 24-22. The women would then score the next four points to win the third 26-24 and keep the match alive.
For the third consecutive set, the Redhawks were able to get out to an early lead. They led 7-2 but as they did for the previous three sets, the Spartans responded. They tied the set at 13-13 before falling behind 18-16. La Roche started to pull away at the end and D'Youville was unable to muster up another comeback as they fell 25-20 and lost the match 3-1.
Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) concluded her career with her fourth consecutive double-double as she led the team with 18 kills, adding 19 digs. Desiree Walters (Oswego, NY/Oswego) led the team with 29 digs with Talia Wright (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) adding 25 digs.
Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) was second on the team with 15 kills in her final game with the D'Youville and Gabriella Mas (Orchard Park, NY/Nardin Academy) added three digs in her final game. Angela Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) tallied a double-double of her own with 36 assists and 10 digs in the match.
Carly Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) recorded eight kills and nine digs with Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) adding three kills. McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) added three assists and two digs with Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) led the team with two blocks. Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) chipped in with a kill.
