Depew, NY - Wednesday, May 1 marked a day of celebration and recognition for all of D'Youville's student-athletes at the yearly Athletics Awards Banquet at Salvatore's Hospitality.
Assistant coach Kyle Trimble presented the awards to the D'Youville women's cross country team.
Sophomore Danielle Couch (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) led off the evening as she received the team's Most Improved Player award. Couch participated in every race for the Spartans this season with improved times and finishes on the team throughout the season. Her best 5k race came in the Harry F. Anderson Invitational while her best 6k time came in the Geneseo Invitational.
Following her MVP season as a freshman, sophomore Rachel Luczak (Lancaster, NY/Immaculata) was the recipient of the team's Spartan Award this season. Luczak was one of the top two best runners for the women in 2018, finishing first or second in all seven of the team's races. At the Hilbert Fall Classic, Rachel finished second overall in the 3,2k and finished fourth overall at the Meghan Memorial. Luczak was also the team's Sportsmanship Award recipient from the AMCC. The Spartan Award represents a player who exemplifies teamwork, passion and a dedication to their team.
Junior runner Samantha Ruszczyk (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) took home Most Valuable Player in her first season with the team. Ruszczyk was the top runner for the women in every race she ran, including a second overall finish at the Buffalo State Invitational and first overall at the Meghan Memorial. Her top 5k time of the season was 19:48.8 and a season best 24:04.3 in the 6k. Samantha missed the final two races of the season due to injury.
