Final Minute Rally Leaves Spartans Short Against Bobcats

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's basketball team began their weekend with a loss to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats Saturday afternoon by the final score of 74-68.

The Spartans pulled into one after a pair of Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) hit a pair of free throws and then VanDuluitgaarden put D'Youville ahead with a three just a few seconds later. On their next possession down the court, the Bobcats tied the game and then took the lead on the following possession

Ahead by five with 10:09 to go in the first half, D'Youville began to fall even further behind. They trailed by 10 and then 13 with 5:07 to go, but the Spartans then got into a groove. Down 33-21 with 4:43 remaining, VanDuluitgaarden and Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) outscored the Bobcats 12-5 in to close out the half – including back-to-back threes from VanDuluitgaarden in the final minute – to bring D'Youville within five as they trailed 38-33 at the half.

The Spartans continued to step it up on offense in the second half with nine unanswered points in the first 4:15 to retake the lead at 42-38. Following a Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) three, the Spartans were right back in it as they trailed by one with under 10 to go.

With just 1:48 left, the deficit for D'Youville grew to 12 but the Spartans had a spark left, beginning with a Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) three. VanDuluitgaarden then scored four consecutive points to make it a five-point game at 71-66 with 0:20 to. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Heard came up with a steal and a layup to cut the deficit to just three at 71-68. Despite making it a one possession game, Greensburg came up big from the line in the final seconds to clinch the game for the Bobcats by the final score of 74-68.

"We played well in spurts today and were right there at the end," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We need to get healthy and make a couple big shots."

VanDuluitgaarden continued to get into form after coming back from injury as he recorded a double-double. The lengthy guard recorded a team high 25 points with 12 rebounds, second only to Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) with 13 boards. Heard scored 10 points to go with four assists while Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School), VanAuken, and Drumgoole each had eight points. Kunelius added six points, five boards, and three assists as well.
