Spartans Blow Out Bobcats at Home

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's basketball team dominated the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats on Saturday afternoon, defeating their guests by the final score of 105-72.

D'Youville led early in the first half at 7-6 before they began to fall behind the guest Bobcats. Greensburg hit a three to take the 11-9 lead, extending it to 13-9 less than a minute later. Their lead then moved up to six at 17-11 before the Spartans would then begin to heat up and power past the Bobcats.

Trailing by two at 19-17, Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) tied the game on a made jumper with 9:55 to go in the first. VanDuluitgaarden then hit back-to-back threes to send the men up six. Greensburg pulled to within two at 25-23, but from that point on the Spartans went on a 21-4 run capped off by a Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) made layup with 1:33 to go in the half. With less than a minute to go in the first, Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) drilled a three as the Spartans went into halftime leading big 49-32.

The Spartans opened up the second half on fire, scoring the first seven points to open up a 34-point lead. Greensburg would back to within 20 after a made three to trail 61-41, but D'Youville did not let up. After a made Bobcat three with 11:28 to go in the game, Nwaekeke started to heat up. He scored 11 of the next 17 points for the Spartans, with threes from Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) and Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark), as D'Youville opened up an 84-59 lead.

Sharp continued to be efficient from the outside with a pair of threes, increasing the lead to 30. Heard grew the lead to 35 with five consecutive points and Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) put the team into triple digits with a three as the Spartans would roll onto their fifth conference victory of the season by the final score of 105-72.

"I was really pleased with how we played today," said head coach Earl Schunk. "It probably was our best 40-minute effort of the season on both ends of the court. My guys were aware of Greensburg's offensive talent and I think for the most part, they kept their focus defensively, which in turn got our offense going."

Nwaekeke had his most efficient scoring day of the season. The senior scored 23 points with five rebounds off the bench to lead the team in scoring, shooting 10-13 from the field and 3-5. Sharp and Heard each were extremely efficient as well as Sharp tallied 14 points with a team high three steals and Heard scored 13 with a team high six assists. Both shot over 50% from the field.

VanDuluitgaarden tallied 19 points to go with a team high nine rebounds with Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) scoring 16 points to go with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) scored six points with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists while Darrell scored four with four boards and three assists. Camel chipped in with seven points.

Drumgoole scored three points in extended minutes with Jake Funderburk (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Mike DiPane (Seaford, NY/St. Anthony) each grabbing one rebound.

The next game for the men will come against a familiar foe as D'Youville will travel to Greensburg, PA to face the same Bobcats on Monday, January 21 at 3:00pm.
