Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered their first home conference loss of the season on Wednesday evening, falling to the Penn State-Behrend Lions by the final score of 82-56.
The Lions jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the Spartans before D'Youville would come roaring back to take the lead on a Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) made jumper. With nearly five minutes off the clock in the first, Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) drilled a three to make it a 13-9 lead for D'Youville. A seven point lead for the men would open up after a made free throw from Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) before the Lions would score seven unanswered to tie the game up at 16-16.
Both teams continued to battle as the Spartans trailed by one with under nine minutes to go. A three from Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) gave the lead back to the Spartans at 28-27 before Behrend overtook D'Youville for the lead. With 3:53 to go in the game, the Lions extended their lead to seven and then went up by 13 with 1:11 to go. At the half, Behrend would lead 47-32.
D'Youville would close the gap to 10 at 51-41 with a Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) 2:35 into the second half. Over the next several possessions, the Lions would start to pull away from the Spartans. The Behrend lead would grow to 15 and then 20 with less than 11 minutes to go in the game.
The lead that the Lions built was too large for D'Youville to overcome as they fell to Behrend 82-56.
Darrell led the team with 20 points in the game, followed by Rosales with his second consecutive double-double as he recorded 11 points with 11 rebounds. Beyer added seven points while Sharp and Drumgoole each scored five.
The next game for the men comes this Saturday, December 7 as they travel to play the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats at 1:00pm.
