Spartan Seniors Shine in Season Finale

Spartan Seniors Shine in Season Finale

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team lost their season finale on Saturday afternoon to the visiting Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 80-72.

D'Youville came out firing on offense with their three seniors accounting for the first three baskets of the game. Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) and Wanya Bruce (Rochester, NY/Fairport) began the game with back-to-back threes before Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) added a layup for a quick 8-0 lead from the Spartans. The Spartans would limit the Mounties to very little on offense through the first several minutes of the game as D'Youville led 11-6 at the 12:09 mark.

The Mounties would get over their early offensive slump to make a game of it. They trailed by four at 17-21 before a Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) three extended the lead to seven. With 1:04 remaining in the half, Mount Aloysius would close the gap to two on a made jumper, but Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) would close out the half with two free throws as D'Youville led 35-30 at halftime.

It remained a tight game to start the second with Mount Aloysius closing the gap to two again on a made layup. Minutes later at the 14:30 mark, the Mounties would take their first lead of the game on a made three to go ahead by one at 45-44. However, on the next possession Will Saunders (Cleveland, OH/Euclid) would convert an and-one to put the Spartans back in the lead by two. A few minutes later, the Mounties would recapture their lead by two.

After their basket that put them up with 10:11 to go in the game, the Mounties would not trail again until the 5:30 mark when Heard put the Spartans ahead by two at 61-59. That lead change would spark a 9-0 run from Mount Aloysius that would give them the lead for the remainder of the game with the Spartans falling 80-72.

In his final game as Spartan, Bruce put on a career performance with a team-high 21 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Heard closed out his career with 14 points while Rosales grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. He added four points and two steals.

Darrell and Saunders scored 12 points each while Noah Denz (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) grabbed four rebounds and Hartzog scored seven. Ryan Davis (Darien Center, NY/Alexander) grabbed a rebound with an assist.
