Greenville, PA – The D'Youville men's soccer team suffered their first road loss of the season Monday evening, falling to the host Thiel Tomcats by the final score of 5-0.
D'Youville was on the attack in the first 15 minutes of the game, with Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) supplying the early pressure. The freshman hit the post and had a shot blocked within the first 11 minutes, nearly giving the Spartans a quick lead. Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) was close to getting in on the action, but had a shot blocked as well.
The Tomcats were able to fend off the Spartans early and capitalize on their opportunities. Thiel scored three goals in a matter of three minutes to take a fast 3-0 lead. D'Youville was able to get more shots on goal with Sherman forcing a save by the Tomcat keeper, but Thiel would answer with another goal in the 34th minute to take a 4-0 lead. They would maintain that lead and go into the half up by the same score.
In the second half, Sherman and fellow freshman Rehte Ru (Thailand Refugee Camp/Riverside) put pressure on the Thiel goalkeeper once again, but to no avail. In the 69th minute, the Tomcats added another goal to make the score 5-0. The Spartans were unable to crack the Thiel defense as the final horn sounded and D'Youville were defeated 5-0.
D'Youville's offense was pressing hard all evening, tallying 16 shots. Sherman led the way with six, followed by Ru with three. The Spartans had more corner kicks than Thiel and they were equal in the shot column, but the Tomcats were able to block multiple Spartan shot attempts.
In goal, Corey Sikora (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore) saw his first game action, playing the second half of the game. He allowed one goal.
The Spartans will travel to Nazareth on Friday, September 9th, playing at 6:30pm.
