Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team had their highest goal output thus far this season but it wasn't enough to overcome the Alfred State offense as the Pioneers defeated the Spartans by the final of 5-2.
Alfred State opened the scoring just 3:26 into the game on a through ball that led to a breakaway for a quick 1-0 lead. Each team would have shots in the following minutes, but none of those shots would find the back of the net.
In the 21st minute, the D'Youville offense got through to the Alfred State goalkeeper to tie the game at one. Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) controlled the ball at the top of the box and flipped the ball over the Pioneer defender's head and buried his second goal of the season.
Sherman's goal brought the team's offense to life, with Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) nearly sending a Pat Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton) corner kick home for the team's first lead. The Pioneers would nearly take the lead back in the 37th minute with a shot that hit the crossbar, but it stayed out and the game remain tied. The half would end just a few minutes later with the same score.
Each of the teams would have their chances in the early goings of the second half. It wouldn't be until the 63:23 mark where Alfred State would break the tie. The Pioneer player would take a free kick from outside the box and put it in the lower left corner.
However just :32 seconds later, D'Youville would tie the game again as Rehte Ru (Thailand Refugee Camp/Riverside) collected a loose ball in front of the net and put it past the Pioneer keeper for his first goal of the season and his first collegiate goal.
Despite the game typing goal, Alfred State would get a gift as there was a handball in the D'Youville box and put the free kick home for a 3-2 lead. Just over two minutes later, the Pioneers would add to their lead with another goal on a shot from across the box for a 4-2 lead.
Owning a two-goal lead, Alfred State wouldn't allow another goal for the rest of the game. With 2:43 to go in the game, they would add an insurance goal for a 5-2 lead and go on to win by the same score.
Corey Sikora (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore) picked up the start in goal, making four saves. Sherman and Pauly led the offense in shots, with Mann, Sherman, Ru and Abhijit Gopinath (Brampton, ON, CA/Fletcher's Meadow) all recording shots on goal. Ru and Sherman were the goal scorers for the Spartans.
The men will host their next game of the season on Tuesday, September 20th at 7pm at Dobson Field. The game is the team's last before conference play begins on Saturday, September 24th.
