Buffalo - The D'Youville men's soccer team was defeated by the visiting Penn State-Behrend Lions Tuesday evening by the final score of 3-1.
D'Youville was right on the Behrend defense from the opening whistle. Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) forced the Lion goalkeeper to make a save just 5:12 into the game. Just over a minute later, the Spartans stepped up the intensity with the games first goal.
Freshman Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) made a nice defensive play and brought the ball down the right wing to play a through-ball to Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport). Sherman then took the ball and chipped it over the challenging Lion goalkeeper to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.
Goalkeeper Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was called upon several times in the first half to keep the lead in tact. Up until the 42nd minute, the Spartan defense held firm and were able to keep the Lions off the scoreboard, but in the 42nd minute Behrend was able to get right back in the game.
Penn State was able to score in the 42nd minute off a rebound and then score another goal just :23 seconds before halftime to take a 2-1 lead into the half.
Pat Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton) put a shot on net to open up the second half but was unable to beat the Lion goalkeeper. Behrend put pressure on the D'Youville defense in the second half and added an insurance goal in the 75th minute for a 3-1 lead. Penn State would hold onto their lead for the remainder of the half and go on to win the game 3-1.
Following his first collegiate assist last game, Ciccarelli added another to his team lead on Tuesday. Sherman scored his team leading fourth goal of the season and second in as many games. Petruzzo played well in net, making eight saves.
D'Youville will next travel to Franciscan on Saturday, October 1st to play the Barons at 3:15pm.
