Men's Soccer Shuts Out Alfred to Close Out Weekend

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team closed out their weekend with a win on Sunday afternoon as they shutout the Alfred University Saxons by the finals score of 3-0.

It was all Alfred to begin the game as the the Saxons tallied the first nine shots of the game through the first 33 minutes. One the Spartans got their first shot off in the 34th minute, the offense started to roll.

On just their third shot of the game, D'Youville took the lead. A beautiful lead up of passes down the left side of the field found Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) in the middle of the field to a streaking Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) from his left back position where the junior put his shot far post to beat the Alfred goalkeeper to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. That goal would be the only one of the half with D'Youville leading 1-0 at halftime.

The chances became more balanced in the second half with Alfred generating the first several opportunities. Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) nearly extended the lead for the Spartans in the 57th minute, but his shot hit the crossbar.

Just a few minutes later in the 62nd minute, Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) would add to the D'Youville lead with his third goal of the season. The pressure on the Alfred defense as just five minutes later the Spartans would increase their goal total with Sherman's team leading fifth of the season as Mwibeleca Tumba (Congo/Fraternity Institute) played a beautiful ball to Sherman for the goal.

D'Youville would finish off the game strong as they earned their fourth victory of the season and shutout Alfred by the score of 3-0.

As they have done several times this year, the Spartan's defense was impressive throughout the game. Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) played 80 minutes and made seven saves with Cristino Almonte (Buffalo, NY/MST) making his collegiate debut for the final 10 minutes of action and securing the shutout. Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Kowalewski, AJ Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), and HsaKlo Moo (Riverside, NY/McKinley) all were excellent of defense in the win.

The starting midfield of Tiago Salles (Porto Allegre, Brazil/Colegio Anchieta), Ciccarelli, and Dumond with the attacking presence of Chris Irakoze (Caen, France/Middle Early College), Noah Steele (Heuvelton, NY/Heuvelton), and Sherman made for a team effort in the win. Tumba, Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Jack Schmittendorf (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), Alex Armburst (Elma, NY/Iroquois), and Sean O'Connor (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) all were important pieces to the victory. Benjamin Cresanti (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove), Jumale Jumale (Buffalo, NY/DaVinci), and Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) all received extending playing time.

D'Youville will be back at it this Wednesday, September 18 as they play their final non-conference game at Buffalo State at 7:00pm.
