Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team fell to the Hilbert Hawks in their first conference game of the season on Wednesday evening by the final score of 80-67.
Quarter number one was very high scoring between the two teams. D'Youville got out to a 7-4 lead through 3:15 of play in the first after a Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) made layup. Hilbert would take over the lead on a made three, but the Spartans would answer with a three from Carpenter to retake the lead. The Hawks tied the game at 12-12 but Carpenter responded yet again with a three to give the team the lead back. Through the final several minutes, the Hawks would pick up their offensive game and lead 22-19 after one quarter.
Hilbert began to create some separation between themselves and D'Youville, leading 30-21 after just over three minutes of play. The Hawks lead grew to 14 several minutes later with the Spartans fighting to keep the game from getting away from them. In the final minute of play, Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) drilled a three to cut the deficit to 13 as the Spartans went into the half trailing 44-31.
D'Youville opened up the second half by scoring on their first four possession, cutting the deficit to eight at 48-40. The offensive outburst from the Spartans continued as they outscored the Hawks 14-4 in the first 4:07 of the third as they drew to within three after another Carpenter three and a made Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) jumper. Through the remainder of the third, both teams settled in on defense. They combined for 15 points through the final five-plus minutes as Hilbert led 57-51 heading into the fourth quarter.
Neither team scored in the first two minutes of the quarter as the two defenses began to take control of the game. However, Hilbert would then take over the game as they scored 10 of the first 12 points in the quarter to go up 67-53 with 5:45 to go in the game. D'Youville was able to trim their deficit to single digits once again at 71-64, but the Hawks were able to keep the Spartans at an arms length as they went on to win their first matchup of the season 80-67.
Carpenter had a breakout performance for the women with 22 points and nine rebounds - both which led the team and were career highs. The sophomore shot very well no matter where she was on the floor as she went 7-13 from the field, 3-4 from three, and 5-6 from the line. She added two steals and an assist in the game.
Three fellow Spartans each scored in double-figures for the women. Evans added 12 points with five rebounds while Alton and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) each scored 11. Hore chipped in with a team high eight assists with six rebound and three steals.
The women will next hit the road for their first conference game of the season as they travel to Franciscan this Saturday, December 1 as they play the Franciscan Barons at 1:00pm.
