Alton, Hore Lead Women in Big Conference Win

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team go back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 73-61.

D'Youville jumped out to an early 7-5 lead over the Mounties following a Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) three nearly four minutes into the game. Back-to-back baskets in the paint from Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Sara Field (Durhmaville, NY/VVS) to increase the team's lead to six. Mount Aloysius climbed back to within three on a made three with less than two minutes to go in the first, but Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would answer with a three of her own to make it a six-point game again. Field would hit a quick layup to end the quarter, leading after one 19-11.

Within the first minute and a half of the second, the Mounties had trimmed their deficit to just tree. Alton would hit a pair of threes over the next several minutes as Mount Aloysius was within five at 25-20.  With just under three minutes to go in the quarter, Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) hit a jumper to send the Spartans up by nine at 32-23. With 1:00 left in the half, Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) sent the Spartans up by 11 and the teams would go into the half with D'Youville leading 38-27.

The lead for D'Youville grew to 13 after one minute of play in the third but would then increase to 15 after a Smith made layup less than a minute later. Closing the lead to 10, the Mounties would fall behind again by 14 with under five minutes to go in the third. An and-one by Alton kept the lead at 14 as the Spartans continued to pound the paint and get to the line. D'Youville would continue to hold their double-digit lead through the end of the third, leading 53-40 heading into the fourth.

Alton started off the fourth with a three to increase the team's lead it's largest of the game at 16. With 5:28 to go in the fourth, the Mounties brought the lead to within 10 on a made three. On their next possession, Mount Aloysius would bring their deficit to within single digits after a layup to make the score 60-52. A Hore and-one would put D'Youville back up by 11 with 4:17 to go in the game, but the Mounties would answer with a layup.

With 2:08 remaining on the game clock, Smith went to the line and sank both free throws to put the Spartans up 12. A three from Mount Aloysius with just over a minute to go would make it a nine-point game, but Hore would answer right back with a dagger three. That would put the nail in the coffin for the Spartans as they went on to defeat the Mounties by the final score of 73-61.

Four Spartans scored in double-figures, led by Alton with 16. She went 4-8 from three with six boards and three assists. Missing her first career triple-double by an assist, Hore recorded 16 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists. Smith also tallied a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Field also chipped in with 13.

Off the bench, Carpenter led the team with seven points and eight rebounds. Woznaik chipped in with a pair of points and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored three. Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) played valuable minutes while Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) dished out two assists.

D'Youville will have a quick turnaround as they host the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers this Monday, February 4 at 6:00pm.
